Sedgehill Flower Festival - 28th to 30th July 2017
- Details
- Written by Tony Gowers
For three days at the end of July 2017, St Catherine's Church in Sedgehill was transformed by the Shaftesbury Flower Arranging Group and a few of their friends into a magnificent vista of skilled and colourful floral displays, depicting ”For All the Saints”.
There were twenty three separate arrangements including fence and gate decorations and a spectacular floral arch over the church porch to welcome visitors. inside the church individual tributes were inspired by saints from within our Benefice, our church's stained glass windows and other local churches.
The floral display for St. Catherine, our Patron Saint, incorporated a wheel, reflecting the popular symbol associated with her name. From St Bartholomew to St Ives we were treated to a wonderful varied display of original and skilled interpretations of the individual saints accompanied by a useful information sheet outlining their patronages.
Throughout the three days we were treated to organ music beautifully played by a number of volunteer organists. Their contribution enhanced the ambience within the church and was much appreciated by our visitors.
The festival culminated with Sung Eucharist at Evensong led by Bishop Edward Condry and our Rector, Richard. We were delighted with the support from across the Benefice and beyond for both the flower festival and Sung Eucharist. This all contributed to the full and happy atmosphere of the occasion. it was also good to welcome back families to Sedgehill and catch up with old friends.
Refreshments proved popular in the marquee with homemade cakes, scones, biscuits and ploughman's lunches.
None of this could have happened without the driving force of Liz Stopford and the Shaftesbury Flower Arranging Group who coordinated and gave an immense amount of their time, skill and effort in creating the displays. We owe you a huge and heartfelt thank you. As the weather was a bit variable maybe next time (!) we should include St Medard the patron saint for weather?
Thank you to Anna for organising the organists, the local ladies for the delicious food each day and not forgetting the men who put up and transported tables, chairs and the marquees.
We are delighted to have raised £2,500, which includes Gift Aid to be claimed on all donations, towards church funds: a magnificent result from a memorable few days.
